I started off my career working in an office environment every day. We had meetings in person, worked on projects together, and were able to ask each other questions from across the room. Since the pandemic began, working from home has become the new normal, and most companies are still allowing a hybrid work environment. Adjusting to this new work environment means that it is more important now than ever before to have good communication.
Below are 4 practices I incorporate in my workday that help keep lines of communication strong!
1. Meet Face to Face When Possible
Typing via skype, phone call, or email may be time efficient, but you could be missing out! Not all emotions are received or understood through digital messages. It is best to hop on a Skype call or Zoom meeting whenever possible so that you get the feel of an in-person meeting! Try planning a morning team meeting or end of day wrap up call to stay in touch and on top of your workload!
2. Set Deadlines
During your morning or afternoon calls, communicating upcoming deadlines or new work is also important. This helps make sure that all work is being completed efficiently and on time. If you don’t think you are going to meet a deadline, it is important to communicate that to your team as soon as possible so the work still gets completed.
3. Ask Questions
When going over projects, make sure you ask any and all questions you may have. This ensures that projects are completed correctly, and you won’t have to spend as much time making changes to things you didn’t understand fully.
4. Give Feedback
When reviewing things with your team, don’t be afraid to give suggestions or your input. You may come up with something that they might not have thought of that can improve the final project!
Communication is the key to keeping your workflow going! Having meetings, setting deadlines, asking questions, and giving feedback are four great and easy ways to start improving your communication skills today.
