As social media becomes continuously more relevant, it is important for companies to capitalize on this growing outlet. However, there is not one single form of social media, and it can be complicated to juggle and understand the different platforms. There are restrictions and accepted norms for each platform, as well as differing audiences. While there are dozens of social media platforms, there are a few overwhelmingly popular ones of which to take notice.

Facebook

Facebook is the most popular social media platform, especially when it comes to young adults and middle-aged users. Adults, specifically between the ages of 25 and 45, are using Facebook more than any other age category. On your company’s Facebook profile page, you can upload pictures and videos, links to outside articles or websites, or even advertisements that can be viewed by the company’s followers. It is a great way to promote campaigns, events, or projects!

Instagram

As opposed to Facebook, Instagram attracts users under the age of 30. Specifically, Instagram is becoming increasingly popular among teenagers and users in their early 20’s. Instagram differs from other platforms in the fact that every post must include a picture or video. This visual can promote a current product, project, or campaign. Instagram also offers a “story” feature that you can use to convey short and fun messages to your followers.

YouTube

YouTube is popular across all ages but is used more in ages under 55 years old. YouTube is a video-sharing platform that allows you to upload a variety of videos to an account for your subscribers to view. These videos can include advertisements, how-to videos or tutorials, or footage from a company event. You can also share and like others’ videos!

Twitter

Lastly, while Twitter may not have as many active users as the previous three platforms, it is still a platform worth noticing and a range of ages utilize the platform. With a limit of 280 characters, Twitter forces its users to be concise. Because of this, Twitter is often used as an outlet to convey personality. You can post fun updates about upcoming or past events and try to keep your posts clever and upbeat!

While this is only the surface of social media platforms, this is a great place to start! Don’t be afraid to be creative with your posts – that is what will make a company and its posts stand out and attract attention. We encourage you to explore deeper into the world of social media, because it is taking over!
