One big event that happens between the first and second month of the new year is the Chinese New Year. It typically lands between January 21 – February 20. The date changes yearly – for 2023, it falls on January 22.

The Chinese New Year follows the Chinese Zodiac, which carries 12 separate animals, and for 2023 it is the year of the Rabbit. This is a joyous time of the year for many people in China, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and many more. Families gather to share a meal, wearing their newest outfits or decked out in the color red. At these gatherings, money is typically exchanged in little red envelopes. These envelopes signify luck, prosperity, and wealth for the new year. Other traditions that are celebrated during this time include lighting lanterns to signify the Lunar moon, lighting firecrackers to scare the bad spirits away, and utilizing dragons and lions to help protect your property.

Something to note in Chinese culture is that the number 4 is symbolized as bad luck, as it also sounds like death in Chinese, while the number 8 sounds like prosperity and fortune. Try to stay away from giving people things that have 4 in them, or bump it up to 8 pieces for the lucky number!
