Over the past few years, we have seen Augmented Reality steadily become more and more popular. This year, we may see another leap with AR and its use in content creation for social media marketing.

What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented Reality is a technology that allows you to see your real-life environment while overlaying virtual objects right on top of it. One example of this you may be familiar with is the mobile game Pokémon GO. AR uses cameras, sensors, and software to detect the user’s environment, allowing these virtual objects to blend with your own environment.

Why Augmented Reality Has Become A Big Deal
In 2024, Augmented Reality rapidly gained traction, with statistics showcasing its growth and adoption across multiple industries. In 2024, the mobile AR Market was valued at 11.9 billion dollars. While we’ve seen a vast share of value come from mobile games, we’re now starting to see AR being used on Instagram, Snapchat, & TikTok in many ways.

How AR is Being Used in Brand’s Social Media Strategies
While AR can deliver a lot of fun in the case of mobile games, it also has a lot to offer in the form of Social Media Marketing.

  1. Virtual Try-Ons: Loreal
  2. AR Powered Ads: Pepsi MAX: Unbelievable Bus Shelter
  3. Product Visualization: Ikea’s AR Tools

These are just a few examples of how Augmented Reality has become a powerful tool for brands to captivate audiences and create memorable, interactive experiences on social media. By combining creativity and functionality, AR strives to create content that drives engagement and bridges the gap between digital and real-world content. So, where does this leave AR in the future?

Where AR is going in 2025 & Beyond!
As we move through 2025 and beyond, AR is set to have an increased role in social media marketing by offering experiences that are highly personalized and immersive for each user. One of the biggest things to look for is AR wearables.

This year, smart glasses were among the most sought-after products at the Consumer Electronics Show. This is important as these glasses aim to create a seamless mixed-reality experience. Instead of grabbing your phone and going through different steps in your AR experience, you always have one right in front of your eyes. This means brands will have to develop new means of connecting with their audiences with this tech, and if they gain popularity soon, you can be sure no company will want to lag behind its potential.
