Yes and no.

As a small business owner, it can be discouraging when you put time and effort into your social media presence and the likes and follows just aren’t flooding in. When it seems like no one is paying attention, it can lead one to think, “Do I really need social media?” Trust me…the answer is still yes. Let me explain why.

Just because someone isn’t liking your posts or following your page, doesn’t mean they don’t see and appreciate them. I may personally love your establishment or cause, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I want to see posts from you all the time. So, I may not be following you on my personal account, but I still appreciate the updates you provide when I do need to visit your page for information; on the other hand, if you consistently post about events, giveaways, sales, or new products you have, I may just have to throw you a follow so I can take advantage of what you’re offering.

When it comes to likes and follows, you also need to think about your target audience. If you’re selling a product for seniors, I doubt they will be browsing their smartphones and judging your Instagram feed’s aesthetic. You may not have the highest following, but if you are posting on social media, this shows a certain amount of effort and professionalism.

Here’s a few reasons why your business needs social media, even if you have fewer followers than you would like:

Credibility

If your business doesn’t have a lot of brand recognition, potential customers may be hesitant to invest in your products or services. A social media presence with real-life content and customer testimonials could sway this window shopper into becoming a consumer.

Brand personality

Your social media can bring a business to life. A commercial or a quick glance at a curated website can only do so much for a user’s opinion of your brand. For more raw, real content, customers will turn to your social media.

Trustworthiness

Whenever a business does not have social media, it makes me skeptical. Is it laziness? A lack of demand for their content or interest in their brand? Are they hiding something? You do not want users to be hesitant about you or your product!

Are you open?

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses were shutting down left and right. It was customary for me to call businesses to see if they were open before even considering driving there. Don’t let people question if you are open or closed – being active on social media and even including your hours in your bio shows you are open and ready to serve your customers!

Presence in your community

Sharing the love on social media is HUGE! Showing support for other businesses encourages reciprocity. If you follow, they follow. If you comment, they comment. This is a simple way to gain a following and a support system within your community all at once! Who knows, you may even gain a partnership or sponsor out of it.

Yes, of course things like followers and likes are important and can be a useful tool for your business; however, your social media holds more weight than you may realize. So, get sharing, liking, following, and commenting, and don’t be discouraged if engagement is lacking.
