We enjoy a day in the field, taking pictures at our client’s locations. From restaurants and stores to apartments and manufacturers, we love capturing it all. Sometimes our job as photographers requires us to do extra work to get the set ready to be captured.

Here are some steps to get your place photo-ready so your photographers can focus on capturing the details.

1. Does it spark joy?

It’s time to Marie Kondo-up your space by eliminating clutter. If it doesn’t spark joy, put it away but don’t be afraid to save it for another day. This also applies to hiding trash receptacles and extra items on counters. The less distractions you have, the better.

2. Timeless décor

Don’t let seasonal décor define your business, unless you are the Christmas Tree Shop. It is important to eliminate seasonal décor unless it is the purpose of your marketing piece.

3. A clean place is a happy place

I cannot emphasize this enough. The last thing you want people to focus on is smudges or dirt on glass and other surfaces. Be sure to have everything in tip top shape from glasses and plates to windows, displays, and flooring.

4. I saw the sign

The last thing you want showing in your marketing piece are happy hour specials from a year ago. It is also important to recognize in this COVID-19 era, we have a lot more signage in place to keep everything safe. You may not want those elements displayed in your marketing photographs. Be sure to place all unnecessary signage out of sight.

5. Set up for success

If you have a restaurant, have your place settings ready to serve and make sure the bar is fully stocked. The same goes for stores. It is also beneficial to point out any special details to your photographer so they know to capture them, too.

6. It’s all in the details

Do you have any monogramed items? Perhaps coasters, napkins, glasses, cutting boards, or menus? Set aside extras of these items so your photographer can stage them within the photographs. These small details go a long way as an extension of your brand.

7. Lights, camera, action!

Make sure all light bulbs are in working order. The photographer might pump up the lights to add ambient light to a space. Be sure to test all lights and fixtures to make sure you don’t have any dead bulbs.

We encourage you to take these steps to have the most efficient photoshoot day. Having everything set up and ready to go eliminates the need for the photographer to manipulate the scene.
