Whatever the reason, we can all learn from others’ work and use it as inspiration to grow. With the millions of websites on the internet, there are new ideas, concepts, and designs being added every day. Here are a few websites that showcase creative and innovative web design/development methods.
This is a refreshing start to our list; It takes everything we know about websites and throws it out the window. This site rethinks the very purpose of a website as we know it today. In this unique comic book style experience, the user isn’t trying to be sold or taught anything, but instead is brought on an interactive, artistic journey simply for the experience. This concept, of course, would be difficult to apply to most other web projects; however, this website can stand as a creative reminder to think outside the box and consider the experience that your website provides to a user in not only a visual way, but an audible and interactive one as well.
Did this site make you hungry? If it did, it’s because it doesn’t hold back. Everything about this website is big, bold, and in your face. Now, not everyone wants to bring that kind of energy to their users, but one thing is for sure – you know what this website is about. Something to take away from this is the importance of making your purpose known. What do you want to tell your users and how do you want them to feel when they visit your website? Whatever that is, stand by it and carry that energy into all aspects of your website.
Another interesting thing about the MAC website that you might have missed is the scroll mechanic. Go ahead – go back and scroll around. It feels a little different, doesn’t it? The way this site was developed included a super cool scrolling mechanic that almost gives the pages weight. The slight pre-delay and post-gliding gives a unique experience that plays into its overall theme.
Ok, this website is just a blast. I could spend way too much time just having fun driving around this person’s website. This concept is extremely unique and innovative, of course, and has sort of a blunt force approach to gaining your interest. A project like this probably took a lot of time, and the payoff to that is, despite not being the easiest to maneuver, a ton of interaction and fun. So much so, that instead of the designer pushing you towards their content, they make you want to seek it out!
Honestly, a list of takeaways from a website like this can be endless or empty depending on what you’re looking for, but it just might be the refreshing surprise to make you start thinking.
Sometimes it takes looking at extreme examples to see the values things possess so that we can learn from them. The next time you design something – anything – utilize inspiration and note what you take from it. What did you like or dislike, and how can you incorporate those ideals into your own work?
