When the average person thinks about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), they think about good keywords and terms to help their rankings; however, there are more factors to SEO that are behind the scenes. One of those is Technical SEO.

Technical SEO refers to website and server optimizations that help search engines crawl and index your site more effectively. Let’s take a closer look at some of the technical aspects that affect your site’s rankings.

Ensure Your Site Is Mobile-Friendly

Like our approach to web design, having a mobile-first approach provides a fully responsive web experience no matter the device you are viewing it on, e.g., mobile, tablet, desktop. More than 50% of all website traffic comes from a mobile device – I’m not even counting tablets here. You can see how important it is to have your site optimized for mobile user experience.

Don’t Use Duplicate Content

Using the same content on multiple pages can confuse search engines and result in lower rankings. Also, no one wants to read the same thing over and over again – they are more likely to leave your site than continue reading. Technically speaking, duplicate content makes your individual pages lose their uniqueness. It’s best to have dedicated content. Think about it this way… by having unique content on one page, it makes that page have more value. By copying that content onto multiple pages, you are essentially splitting the value of that content onto other pages. Therefore, depleting that page’s importance. It’s better to have more clicks on a single URL instead of spreading out among many.

Have An SSL Certificate

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol for establishing secure links between networked computers. This tells your users that it is safe to browse your website. It safeguards any sensitive data being transferred between the server and the user’s device. You will know a site is secure by the padlock symbol next to the website URL in your browser. When you see that, you know the SSL certificate is in place and the site is secure.

Speed Up Your Site

Google and other search engines prefer sites that load faster because they give a better user experience. Speeding up a site might go beyond the page. It may relate to the hosting server, image sizes, code, and scripts. Minifying your site’s code will get rid of unnecessary spaces that cause lagging page speeds.

Make Your Website Easy To Crawl

There are several things you can do to make your website easy to crawl. Register the site with Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Create an XML sitemap, which is a map-like file that helps search engine spiders understand what they are crawling on your site.
