Choosing a color palette for your brand can prove to be difficult, but I’ve got some advice on how to narrow your color choicesCheck out these 4 quick tips!

Do your color research. Every color has a personality.

Believe it or not, color psychology exists. Hailey van Braam from the University of Amsterdam explains that “when it comes to communication, color is unbeatable. Unconscious or otherwise, color can evoke emotions, inspire reactions, and change modes of thinking. It can excite or soothe your mood, raise, or lower your blood pressure, and even whet your appetite! Whether it’s innate or learned, it’s undeniable that color has a vital impact on how we go about our lives.”

Color is so much more than just color. For years, humans have been drawn to certain colors and averted from others for reasons of association, often based on our emotional reactions to them. Think about which colors or even brands you’ve had your eye on. Why were you so connected to them?

Do your research. Find out what each color may be conveying to your target audience but also what you, as a brand, want to convey. You can find van Braam’s further studies on colors and what each color represents at colorpsychology.org.

Don’t choose the boldest colors just because they are eye-catching.

I often see brands choose primary or bold colors because they are in some of the most attention-seeking color palettes. Though that may be the case, it doesn’t mean it is always the correct path to take.

Let’s take a spa, for example. Would you want to go to a spa that has bright and bold red and yellow branding? I wouldn’t. Those colors don’t give off a calm, clean feeling like a spa should give off. Again, think about who you are as a brand and what atmosphere you want to create.

Channel your inner Goldilocks.

Picking your color palette can be overwhelming, and businesses can often pick too many or too few colors. The “just right” amount is typically 3 colors, but you don’t always have to stick to that. I usually start with:

  • Primary color- This should be the main color that represents your brand’s personality.
  • Accent color- This should work in harmony with your base color.
  • Neutral color- This could be anything from white to beige to gray.

Again, this is just a place to start. Check out some of your favorite brand’s color palettes and put them to the test!

Can’t decide? Look for existing color palettes. Believe me, there are plenty!

The chances are that the color palette you are after already exists. I personally like looking at Pinterest for different color palettes but for something a little bit more guided, check out colormind.io or brandcolors.net for famous brand palettes. Again, don’t just choose one because you like it. Take time to explore what’s out there and why it might work for your brand.

Finding the right color palette for your brand is important! Sticking to these 4 tips will make the process that much easier. Happy choosing!
